What are the Steps to Replacing a Window?

Although window replacement may look like a simple task, it is tiresome, time-consuming, and costly. If you don’t know the right things to do, your effort may even be futile. But we are here to make the job easier for you as this post will give you a step-by-step guide to replace a window.

·  Determine the style and material of window you want

The first step to window replacement is deciding the style and material of windows you want to choose for your home. Generally, there are numerous styles and materials available. So, you should carefully research varying options and consider the peculiarity of your home before choosing anything.

If you have any doubt, don’t hesitate to ask a window replacement contractor about the best window material and style for your house.

·  Measure the length and height of your window

Window frames come in different sizes. So, it is important to choose a replacement window that fits your existing window frames. Therefore, you need to measure the dimension (length and height) of the existing window and use it to choose your next window. Additionally, measure the window’s uniformity. You will need a tape for this task.

·  Get a fitting window

Once you have measured the dimension of your window accurately, you have to purchase a fitting window. You must use the measured dimension to choose your next window. Please, consult a window expert or storekeeper before choosing any window.

·  Remove your old window

After getting a new window, it is time to remove the existing one. Use a putty knife to get rid of the stops on the sides of the window frame. Be careful so that the stops are not damaged. If you take out the stops from the inside, the job will be easier.

The next step is to place the sash over the frame’s underside. You can do this by taking out the wood holding it. If necessary, get rid of the chains. Make sure you also remove the screws and nails attached to the window.

·  Clean the frame

As you take out the window, get rid of the paint and caulk on the window. Afterward, put high-quality wood filler in the existing holes. Let the filler dry before proceeding.

Smoothen the area with sandpaper. Then, use paint to tidy up the surface.

·  Install the new window

Foremost, you need to check if the new window fits the existing frame. You just need to carry the window to the frame to see if it fits. Put the exterior stops in place.

If it fits, it is time to install your new window. Place the window into the frame and use screws to fasten it to the frame. However, make sure all moving components of the window work perfectly before you continue.

Tighten the screws in the window installation kit into the frame. Return the internal stops.

·  Put caulk on the frame gaps

Some gaps may be left outside of the window. So, you need to apply caulk to the gaps. Make sure the caulk doesn’t get to the sashes and jambs of the frame.

Although you can try to replace yourself, you should be careful of damaging your windows or other components in the process. Given this, you should stick to using the services of professional window replacement contractors to handle your window replacement.
